If you were in Battalions (1968-1977) or Divisions (1977-1994) - 1 through 5, then you were Regiment 1 (1968-1977) or Divisions (1977-1994).

If you were in Battalions (1968-1977) or Divisions (1977-1994) - 6 through 10, then you were Regiment 2 (1968-1977) or Divisions (1977-1994).

There were only two Regiments (1968-1977) or MTD (1977-1994). A couple of Rudders state Regiment 4. There was no Regiment 4.

So, if your Rudder states you were Regiment 1 Battalion 8... you were Regiment 2 Battalion 8.

There are many Rudders that list the wrong Regiment or MTD.
Listing of the MTD later discontinued in the Rudder approximately 1978.
Listing of Division discontinued approximately 1982.

On the REMARKS column on the lists, I have listed what information is available for that company. As more info comes in, then I will update that particular Rudder. Some PIRs are listed as (partial) as I do not have a complete program (same for Rudders). Company Photos (some are good and some not so good), but still put them in a digital album for that company until a better scan comes along.

So remember - NOT all Rudder Digital Albums will contain the actual Rudder. Example of what could be:
Rudder, PIR, Company Photo, Personal Photos, Certificate of Training (A School), AT Photos, Exchange Receipt, News article

The Rudder List is listed by the year of enlistment (or your company commencement date as some folks were delayed entry)... NOT when you graduated!

If you do not remember your company number, several things you can do.

1. If you have any paperwork from your military days, look at your Classification Page. The one filled out in boot camp. If you do not have one, you should order your military records. This page will give you your company number in the signature line at the bottom of the page. Your company number is NOT on the DD-214. Only thing is your ENTRY DATE, but NOT your company number. People keep repeating it is but show NO PROOF where it is listed.

2. You can look at the PIR list for the date you believe you graduated to see if anything is listed (still working to find more PIR information). This list is by GRADUATION DATES.

3. You can look at the CC list to see if your CC is listed if you remember their names (this list is in the works for an update)

4. You can check on the year of entry on the Rudder List and see what companies are listed for your time frame. (updates for Rudder views coming in November/December. Still working on them.) This list is by ENLISTMENT-BOOTCAMP ARRIVAL DATE. These two dates may not be the same, as some personnel were delayed entry. Also remember, the date you arrived and the date your company commenced (commissioned) may not be the same either.

5. Currently being worked on is the Rudder Company Personnel List. This list will state the personnel in the company, even if the Rudder is not viewable.

6. Post in one of the bases FB Groups and ask if anyone was in a certain company or in boot at that time. Please make sure it is a legit RTC site. There are a few fakes pages/groups out there. Give as much info as you can in your post (i.e., date, company number, CC name, and/or a recruits name your remember)

**Two through five are in 'construction mode'. Just keep coming back for updates.**

History Tidbit

Ever wonder how our company book received its name? I, as many other shipmates, thought it had to do with the naming of San Diego's ANCHOR and Great Lakes KEEL. We were incorrect in that thought. In 1968, a contest was held to select an appropriate Navy title for this publication. This contest was open to all Regular Navy Recruits and ran for a week. They received approximately 50 enteries. The winning entry was submitted by SN James M Payer from Company 001 - 1968. He stated, "As the Rudder controls a seagoing vessel's heading, RTC heads the Seaman or Seaman Apprentice to new adventures and achievements as a member of the United States Navy." He won a $25 US Savings Bond donated by the Navy Exchange.

The first yearbooks were prepared by Albert Love Enterprises, Inc. They were based out of Georgia and have been out of business for many years. They also printed many other military yearbooks in the 1940s to the 1960s. Some training bases besides RTC Orlando (US Navy - Florida) were RTC Great Lakes (US Navy - Illinois, and Ft Ord (US Army - California). Each company that went through RTC had a Rudder published (except for female companies in 1972 and early to mid-1973). The book contained a section on the entire Recruit Training (which we refer to as Stock Photos), and a section that pertained to the actual company (16 pages, printed in Black and White located at the back of the Rudder). It was approximately Week 4 that the recruits could order their Rudder.

Other publishers were American Military Division (a civilian company - American Publishers), Wadsworth, and Jostens. As per the representives I have been in contact with in 2015/2016, they were only the printer. They did NOT keep these on file, nor do they hold any copyright. As per the US Navy, there is no copyright. You may reproduce, scan, copy, print.

What are the various titles given to companies? How were our companies numbered?

C is for COMPANY - Male and Female companies. Males were 3 digits, Females 4 digits starting with "3". I found only ONE reference that Male companies actually started with "2", hence C 2119 instead of C 119. For some reason, it never stuck nor used..

TU is for TRAINING UNIT - Male and Female companies. Males 3 digits, Females 4 digits starting with "3". "TU" started approximately in 1977.

K is FEMALE ONLY - Replaced the '3' in the company number. (my records will list starting with "3" but indicate "K")

I is for INTREGRATED COMPANIES for years 1992, 1993, and 1994 ONLY! Not all companies in this time frame were 'intregrated'. Some were just male, some were just females, and some were male and females (indicated by photos in the Rudder of those in the company).

Fiscal Year prior to 1976 was 1 July, then changed to 1 October in 1976.

FOR MALES:
1968 - Companies 001 through 044 formed. 1968 Rudder covers did not exist because the companies were formed in the FISCAL YEAR 1969.
1969 - Companies 045 through 236 formed.
1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 - company 001 formed in January and ended in December.
1974 - Company 001 started January and ran through to end of fiscal year in 1975.
1975 - Company 001 started January 1975 and ran through to end of fiscal year 1976.
On September/October 1980 through 1994, company numbers started rolling over to 001 at fiscal year.

FOR FEMALES:
1972 - Started with 3001 on 17 July 1972. Numbers ran to at least 3022 as I have 3023 starting January 1973.
1973 - Sometime in August 1973, company numbers went from 3099 to 3400 (no 3100s or 3200s). Last company number for 1973 was 3452.
1974 - First company was 3453, then between March and May 1974, they started back to 3100. Most likely due to RTC and RTC(W) merger on 1 April 1974. The company numbers continued into 1975.
1975 - Females started back to company 3001 at fiscal year 1976..
1976 - Female companies started at 3001 in October and stayed this way through 1994.

When did they change the female 4 digit company numbers to K and 3 digits? When did they start the "I" (Intregrated Companies)? Why are some only female, only male, and some mixed? When did they go from Gold, to Dark Blue, to Powder Blue, back to Dark Blue covers for our Rudders?
This is based on RUDDERS only. I have not found any official documents stating when changes occured or as to why.

Approximately June 1981, Rudders show "Training Unit K000".

Approximately December 1981, Rudders show "Company K000". This was used through 1991.
This was started in 1992 and ran in 1993, and 1994. They could also be female only, male only, or male and females (co-ed). Not all 'I' companies were co-ed. Several companies from this time also used "C", "TU" and "K".

These years have me thrown for a loop as "C" or "TU" companies are not in the same numbering pattern as "I" companies. Even a few are listed as "K".
Based on Rudder scans, GOLD covers were 1968 to 1973. Dark Blue cover began in January 1974. The early Dark Blue covers only had "RUDDER NAVAL TRAINING CENTER" with no base logo. Approximately 1976, the base logo was added.

Dark Blue ran from approximately 1974 to 1983. Powder Blue seems to have begun in June 1983. Between March and April 1984, they switched back to the Dark Blue cover and it remained until the last Rudder was printed.
What is a PIR? Is that person named the right person with the photo? My Rudder says I graduated on this date, why do you have it wrong?
PASS IN REVIEW. Over the years, it was also referred to as "GRADUATION REVIEW", "RECRUIT GRADUATION REVIEW", "RECRUIT BRIGADE REVIEW", "BRIGADE REVIEW", or "RECRUIT REVIEW". But the one that seem to stick is PASS IN REVIEW.

This was a program given to guest on the day of boot camp graduation. It listed the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Reviewing Officer (and or Special Guest Speaker), Companies Graduating, Awards. It gave specifics to that days graduation.

There are errors on the PIR, mainly the date for the day of graduation. Usually the year.
A couple of Rudders has a recruits photo twice but each with a different name, or the same name but two different photos. One Rudder that I purchased has names crossed out and the correct names written in with the photos. That Rudder they had placed the wrong names to the wrong photos. This Rudder owner fixed the error. Had I not received this one, I may not have even thought there was an error. The COMMENCE date is the date your company was commissioned, regardless to when you arrived at RTC. You could have been at RTC 1 day up to 7 days before your company formed and was commissioned.

The GRADUATION date is the date your company was finally released (disestablished). This could be the same date of your graduation (PIR) or up to a week later.

You have your COMMENCE, GRADUATION, and PIR dates. But like I said, sometimes your Graduation will be the same as PIR..
How long was boot camp training?
When RTC opened in 1968, recruit training was 11 weeks. Training changed many times over the base history. I will post at a later date more infomation.
